Oral Health Advice for Diabetes Patients

Diabetes is becoming a serious concern in the United Kingdom with thousands of people being diagnosed on an annual basis. Diabetes can be effectively managed through diet, exercise and controlling blood sugar levels, but at the same time, it has a negative impact on oral health.

Oral health

Anyone who has been diagnosed with diabetes, whether it's type 1 or type 2, stand an increased risk of periodontal disease and dry mouth syndrome. Periodontal disease is a severe form of gum disease which if left untreated can result in tooth loss. With this gum disease, you will find that pockets are formed between the tooth and gum which is a harbour for dangerous bacteria which attack the supporting structures of the tooth. There is treatments we can use to help treat and manage periodontal disease, helping patients hold onto their natural teeth for as long as possible.

You may be wondering what is so wrong with having a dry mouth. Dry mouth syndrome can be detrimental to your oral health. Your saliva is more important than you may have realised and if you have a dry mouth and are not producing enough saliva, then your teeth aren’t' getting the complete protection they deserve. This can lead to tooth decay and carries moving forward.

Tips to Ensuring Good Oral Health as a Diabetes patient

As a diabetes patient you will soon understand the importance of maintaining your blood sugar levels. Having your levels under control can improve your overall and oral health moving forward. Chance your diet for the better, embrace a healthier lifestyle and start doing some moderate exercise to help you overcome your diabetes on a daily basis.

Next keep your routine dental appointments. You cannot skip or ignore your dental appointments, they are there for a reason. During a routine appointment, we check your mouth, head and neck and look for any problems. This is a chance to catch problems early on and reduce the risk of expensive and long term problems in the future.

Ensure you follow a Face good oral health routine. If you are unsure what you should be doing at home, speak to your dentist who will be more than happy to assist you from helping you learn the right brushing techniques to how often you should be brushing, what toothpaste to use and how to use dental floss, just to name a few.
